New Rush drummer Anika Nilles has addressed the overwhelming response to her joining the legendary band. She shared her thoughts in a statement posted on Instagram.
The statement expressed gratitude to the band members and fans while acknowledging the significance of the moment.
“Hey there, the past few days have been quite overwhelming. I’m sure many of you feel the same,” Nilles said. “I want to take a moment to sincerely thank Geddy and Alex for their trust and for welcoming me on this incredible new journey with Rush.”
She also took time to welcome new supporters and thank longtime followers.
“I also don’t want to miss the chance to warmly welcome all the new faces here and to thank you for your kind and open-minded words – they truly mean a lot,” she continued. “At the same time, I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has followed and supported my journey over the years. We’re all in this together now, and I couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead.”
The announcement marks a significant moment for Rush as Nilles steps into the role previously held by the late Neil Peart, who passed away in 2020. The band’s return to live performances comes after years of uncertainty about their future.
Loudwire reported that Nilles is a highly regarded German drummer known for her technical skill and fluidity who recently toured with Jeff Beck and has released multiple solo albums, including her latest False Truth. Her appointment comes as Rush prepares for their 2026 tour titled “Fifty Something” to celebrate over 50 years of the band’s music.
Geddy Lee mentioned first hearing about Nilles in 2023 and was immediately struck by her talent, as Loudwire noted. The band members had carefully considered the challenges of replacing Peart, a perfectionist and legendary drummer whose contributions to progressive rock were unparalleled.
A Tama Drums video showcasing Nilles’ playthrough of FouFou highlighted her speed, technique, and dynamic drumming abilities. These qualities ultimately convinced Lee and Alex Lifeson that she was the right fit for the band. Reactions from fans and peers have been overwhelmingly positive. Even Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, who had been a favored candidate among some fans, praised her ability and suitability for the role.
The Loon revealed that the “Fifty Something” tour will kick off in June 2026 with multiple dates across North America, including major venues like Los Angeles Kia Forum, Madison Square Garden in New York, and Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Rush’s last full tour ended in 2015 with the R40 tour. Peart retired from touring due to health issues after that tour.
