by The widow of Mark Stone, Van Halen’s original bassist, has shared a touching tribute on the fifth anniversary of her husband’s death. She revealed intimate details about his life after leaving the legendary rock band. The heartfelt message was posted by music historian Greg Renoff on Facebook.
Darlene Stone’s tribute focused on her late husband’s character as a family man and his deep connection to his former Van Halen bandmates, particularly Eddie and Alex Van Halen.
“Five years ago on this day, my husband Mark Stone passed away. Then just ten days later, his friend and former bandmate Ed Van Halen passed away,” she said. “It was crushing and heartbreaking to lose Mark, and it felt surreal that Ed departed so soon after Mark.”
She recalled a special visit from Eddie and Alex Van Halen to their home in February 2014. She described it as a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter and reminiscing about their early days together in bands Genesis, Mammoth, and Van Halen.
Darlene painted a picture of Mark as a devoted family man who prioritized his role as stepfather and grandfather over his musical career.
“Mark was a loving, gentle, supportive stepfather and grandfather,” she continued. “Even though he loved playing bass, after Van Halen he turned down lots of offers to join other bands. He told me that playing with other people just didn’t feel right, because after playing with Ed and Al, nothing else could compare.”
She revealed the emotional toll that leaving Van Halen had on her husband. She noted his hope for a potential reunion.
“I know he wished he could’ve stayed in the band and that he had hopes that he might get the chance one day to play live with them one last time,” Darlene shared. “I like to think that right now he and Ed are together again in another place and time, jamming, just like they did in the garage in Altadena when they were just kids.”
The tribute also expressed gratitude to the Van Halen family for their continued support, particularly Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen, who have honored Mark’s memory in various ways.
Stone’s story reflects the complex journey of a founding member who helped shape one of rock’s most influential bands before stepping away from the spotlight. His departure from Van Halen marked a pivotal moment in the band’s early history. It set the stage for their eventual rise to global stardom.
Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Stone battled cancer, specifically a tumor in his pancreas. He had been under hospice care prior to his death in September 2020. His passing came just ten days before Eddie Van Halen’s own death from cancer. This created a tragic parallel that deeply affected the Van Halen family and fans worldwide.
Stone played a crucial role in Van Halen’s formative years. He performed with Eddie and Alex Van Halen in their early incarnations as Genesis and Mammoth from 1972 until 1974. Consequence of Sound noted that he was replaced by Michael Anthony when the band was renamed Van Halen. This marked the end of his official involvement with the group that would become rock legends.
The reasons behind Stone’s departure were multifaceted and reflected his priorities at the time. Best Classic Bands revealed that his commitment to being a straight-A student split his focus from the band. He was reportedly unwilling to sing background vocals as Van Halen’s music increasingly relied on harmonies. Despite never appearing on an official Van Halen album, Stone’s musical contributions to the band’s early development remain preserved. His bass work can be heard on several early demo tracks, including “Gentleman of Leisure” and “Angel Eyes.” These serve as historical artifacts of Van Halen’s pre-fame era. In his later years, Stone occasionally performed with a Van Halen tribute band called Fan Valen. This suggested his enduring connection to the music that defined his youth.
