Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante is a big fan of Beyoncé.
The singer recently sat down with Spin to talk about five albums she can’t live without. Her third choice was Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance: Act I,’ which came out in 2022.
“Beyoncé is my favorite artist of all time,” Courtney explained. “She is the one artist that makes me empathize with fanatical parasocial behavior. I grew up with her!”
She continued, “I am not blind to a bad song though, if I don’t like something I’m not going to listen just because I love the artist. But she just keeps getting better and better. I can confidently say this is my favorite album of hers, somehow it beat out ‘Lemonade,’ at least for now.”
“I am so inspired by the entire concept, one long mix, referencing the people who created this type of music, a history lesson and celebration with some of the most complex vocal runs I’ve ever heard, yet still hooky. I just love her so much,” LaPlante further said of the record.
In her other picks, Courtney listed ‘Hounds of Love’ by Kate Bush, Loathe’s ‘I Let It In and It Took Everything,’ ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’ by Kendrick Lamar, and Erykah Badu’s ‘Baduizm.’
In 2022, LaPlante reacted on X to Beyoncé’s dance single ‘Break My Soul’ from the ‘Renaissance: Act I,’ album, per Loudwire. The song’s lyrics talk about quitting a job and finding new motivation. She wrote at the time, “NEW BEYONCE AHHHHHHHH.” She added, “I hereby quit my job as she tells me to in this song thank you for all the support but I quit.”
Courtney also named Beyoncé among the artists who inspired her in a 2023 chat with Kerrang. “Beyoncé was the first artist that I realised was proud to showcase how much work and effort goes into being an artist, aside from just the talent and musicality,” she said of the pop star.
“People that sing her kind of music, there’s so much room for them to express themselves in a way other than singing. I love how in control of each aspect of her whole brand she is – I’m inspired by how obsessed she is with everything from the drum hits on her music to the colour of the lighting on her tour,” she also said.
Spiritbox’s North American tour starts on April 3 in Dallas, Texas, and ends on May 10 in Los Angeles, California.
