Phil Demmel recently revealed the surprising reason behind Kerry King’s signature sunglasses look. He shared insights about the Slayer guitarist’s personality in an interview with Fran Strine.
The Machine Head guitarist explained that King’s constant use of sunglasses stems from an unexpected characteristic.
“He wouldn’t want everybody to know that, but he always wears shades because he’s got like super kind eyes, you know?” Demmel said.
Demmel also shared how he came to join Kerry King’s band after leaving Machine Head.
“Before I quit Machine Head, it was the summer before. They were on the Slayer’s on the farewell tour comes through San Jose and I think it’s the last night of that run. I asked Kerry like ‘Hey, so what are you doing after this is done?’ He’s like, ‘I’m gonna keep going and it’s probably going to involve Paul and maybe Gary. I don’t know yet.’ And I said, ‘Oh okay,’” Demmel explained.
The conversation took an interesting turn months later when Demmel announced his departure from Machine Head.
“I’m still in Machine at this point and so fast forward three months later I announce that I’m quitting. And on the same day, I got a text from Kerry saying, ‘That’s why you asked me what I was doing after.’ And that’s when I threw my name in his hat of like, ‘Yeah, dude anything that you’re doing, I would like to have the chance to be in.’ And so he kept, ‘Yeah, we’ll see what’s happening.’ And he kind of hinted as time was going on,” he continued.
Demmel’s transition from Machine Head to working with Kerry King wasn’t just a casual career move. It involved some remarkable circumstances that showcased his dedication and skill as a guitarist.
Guitar World reported that after Demmel quit Machine Head in 2018 due to personal differences, he quickly stepped in to fill a sudden vacancy in Slayer when guitarist Gary Holt had to leave the tour for a family emergency. This opportunity came at a crucial time in Demmel’s career. It provided him with a chance to prove himself on one of metal’s biggest stages.
The challenge Demmel faced was immense. Ultimate Guitar revealed that Demmel learned Slayer’s entire 19-song set in just two days before flying out to Europe to perform. This impressive feat demonstrated not only his technical abilities but also his commitment to delivering a professional performance under extreme pressure.
The quick mastery of Slayer’s catalog helped Demmel make a strong impression on Kerry King. This eventually led to him becoming the second guitarist in King’s new band. Revolver Magazine highlighted that this collaboration proved to be a career-defining moment for Demmel, who found new creative energy working with the legendary Slayer guitarist.
The creative synergy between the two musicians became evident during studio sessions. Demmel recorded about 10 guitar solos and transition licks for King’s solo album From Hell I Rise in just three hours. This showcased the swift musical connection that developed between the veteran metal guitarists.
