The collaboration showcases a shift toward dance music. Both artists expressed enthusiasm about the track’s reception.
“Today’s the day – JOYA is out now! A special collaboration with the incredible Perry Farrell, full of spirit, energy, and that feeling of pure joy on the dancefloor,” Carl Cox announced.
Perry Farrell shared his excitement about the project’s impact on listeners.
“It means the world to me that we’re making people so happy with our music.. Joyaaaaaah!” Farrell said.
Carl Cox elaborated on how the collaboration came together and its role in his performances.
“When the opportunity came to work with Perry, I jumped at it and sent him the idea for Joya! It just came together so beautifully and I have been proud to play it as the closer for all of my sets in the last year,” Cox said. “People respond to it with such joy, and that is what I was aiming for all along! Joya!”
The release marks a significant moment for Farrell as he moves forward with new creative ventures following the dramatic end of Jane’s Addiction’s reunion tour.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the Jane’s Addiction tour came to an abrupt halt in September 2024 after an onstage altercation between Farrell and Navarro during a concert in Boston on September 13. The incident was witnessed by fans and captured on video. It involved Farrell charging at and physically confronting Navarro during the performance.
Following the altercation, Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Chris Chaney released a public statement explaining their decision to cancel the tour. The band members stated that “due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour.” They expressed concern for Farrell’s health and safety as well as their own.
The situation escalated into legal battles between the band members. Farrell responded by filing a lawsuit against the other members. He alleged they unilaterally canceled the tour for improper reasons, including an attempt to control the media narrative and secure insurance coverage. The other members countered with their own lawsuit. They claimed a “majority rules” decision-making system was in place due to past issues with Farrell. They also stated that his actions “single-handedly destroyed the name, reputation, trademark, and viability of the Band and those who built it.”
Both lawsuits are seeking damages. A jury trial may determine the outcome. There is no public evidence yet of reconciliation or plans for the band to reunite. The “JOYA” collaboration represents Farrell’s first musical release since the incident. It signals his commitment to moving forward with new creative partnerships.
