Lou Gramm Reacts to Kelly Hansen’s Decision to Leave from Foreigner for His Wife

Lou Gramm recently shared his thoughts on Kelly Hansen’s retirement from Foreigner. He offered supportive words about Hansen’s decision to prioritize his personal life, as reported in American Songwriter.

Gramm explained the personal reasons behind Hansen’s departure from the band. He highlighted the vocalist’s new relationship and family commitments.

“[Hansen] met and fell in love with [a woman,] and as the relationship deepened, she has two children and he wants to spend all his time with her and the two young children,” Gramm said. “And they bought a house together and everything. So, I wish him well.”

The former Foreigner frontman added a lighthearted perspective on the band’s current stage in their careers.

“I mean … nobody’s a spring chicken in that outfit anyways,” he continued. “And apparently that’s his first serious relationship in many, many years. And I wish him the best.”

Hansen’s departure marks the end of a significant era for Foreigner. The vocalist had been with the band for many years before making his retirement official.

YouTube coverage revealed that Kelly Hansen formally retired as Foreigner’s lead singer in May 2025. He concluded his tenure with a farewell tour that ended in October 2025. His final show took place on October 11, 2025, at the Estess Arena, Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Atlantic City. He gave an emotional farewell speech alongside original Foreigner members.

Following Hansen’s retirement, Luis Maldonado took over as the new lead singer. Maldonado joined Foreigner as a multi-instrumentalist in 2021. He initially hesitated to assume the frontman role but has since integrated well into the band.

AXS TV reported that bassist Jeff Pilson noted Maldonado has brought renewed energy to the band. The transition represents a new chapter for Foreigner as they continue their legacy with fresh talent at the helm.

The band’s decision to continue with Maldonado demonstrates their commitment to keeping the music alive while respecting Hansen’s choice to focus on his personal life and newfound family happiness.
