Kevin Cronin Issues Statement After Reuniting with REO Speedwagon Bandmates First Time In Months

REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin recently addressed the band’s future and their commitment to fans during an exclusive interview with WCIA News. This came ahead of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Homecoming weekend events.

The frontman’s comments came in response to questions about the band members reuniting for the special homecoming celebration. They are not regularly performing together anymore.

When asked “What’s it mean to have all of you guys back together right here this weekend?” Cronin delivered a heartfelt response about the band’s enduring spirit.

“To me it’s to, you know, the fans all around the country. They know that we’re going to be together for the first time in a long time,” Cronin said. “And REO Speedwagon has always stood for, we ride the storm out. We roll with the changes. We keep pushing. We’re a positive energy source and that’s what the institution of REO Speedwagon has always stood for.”

Cronin emphasized the significance of the band’s unity and their dedication to their fanbase.

“So for the four of us to be here together, I think it sends a message to the fans that you overcome whatever you got to overcome in the service of them, the fans, and to be here together in Champagne where the band started,” he continued.

The reunion marks a special moment for REO Speedwagon fans. The band members come together in their hometown of Champaign for the university’s homecoming festivities.

This homecoming reunion carries particular significance given the recent changes in the band’s status and touring arrangements.

AXS TV reported that REO Speedwagon officially ceased touring as of January 1, 2025. The decision cited internal differences and key member retirements. The decision came after decades as a live act, marking the end of an era for the legendary rock band that has entertained millions of fans worldwide.

The band’s final performance under the REO Speedwagon name took place on December 21, 2024, at the Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas. AXS TV confirmed this farewell show. This farewell show represented the conclusion of their touring career, making the University of Illinois reunion even more meaningful for longtime supporters.

Despite the end of REO Speedwagon’s touring days, Kevin Cronin continues to honor the band’s musical legacy. AXS TV noted that Cronin now leads the Kevin Cronin Band. He performs REO hits with a new lineup and tours with notable acts like Styx and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder.

The band’s transformation reflects the natural evolution of veteran rock acts. Founding members pursue different paths while maintaining their connection to the music that defined their careers. For REO Speedwagon fans, Cronin’s message at the homecoming event serves as both a farewell to the classic lineup and a promise that the spirit of the band will continue through new ventures.
