Joel Hoekstra Responds: Did David Coverdale Secretly End Whitesnake?

Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra recently addressed questions about the band’s future in an interview with The Rock N’ Roll And Coffee Show.

When asked whether Whitesnake is in a holding period or definitively done, Hoekstra carefully deflected to frontman David Coverdale for any official statement.

“I mean, that would have to come from David, like in terms of whether or not he’s definitively… He’s never stated as such,” Hoekstra said. “But it’s been a minute now.”

Hoekstra emphasized that making any definitive statements about the band’s status isn’t his place. He noted his relatively recent tenure with the group as a reason for his caution.

“I feel like that’s not my place to ever say because I would never want to say that definitively and have that not be the case,” he continued. “David is obviously been, I don’t know, 50 years involved in Whitesnake and I’m just a guy who kind of came on for the last chapter. So I feel like I’m out of place trying to talk about any kind of, you know, what the plans would be.”

Hoekstra’s cautious response reflects the uncertain status of Whitesnake since the band went on hiatus in 2022. American Songwriter reported that Coverdale suffered a serious respiratory infection that forced the band to cut short their European farewell tour and cancel a North American leg.

The band last performed with Coverdale officially in June 2022 before the hiatus began. Coverdale has indicated in recent years that retirement from touring was a possibility due to age and health concerns. However, he has not definitively ended Whitesnake. He has given permission for band members to perform Whitesnake material without him.

In summer 2025, most members except Coverdale performed together at the Zaječar Guitar Festival in Serbia under the name “Whitesnake Experience by the Members of Whitesnake.” The Highway Star noted that this lineup included Joel Hoekstra on guitar, Tommy Aldridge on drums, Marco Mendoza on bass, Michele Luppi on keyboards, and Dino Jelusick singing lead.

Hoekstra’s involvement in these post-hiatus performances positions him as a key figure in keeping Whitesnake’s music alive. He continues to respect Coverdale’s legacy and authority over the band’s official status. Outside Whitesnake, Hoekstra is also known for his involvement in other hard rock projects and his solo work.

Any official announcement regarding Whitesnake’s future would need to come directly from David Coverdale himself.
