Iron Maiden Faced a Career-Defining Dilemma After Nicko McBrain’s Health Scare, Steve Harris Reveals

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris recently opened up about the difficult circumstances surrounding drummer Nicko McBrain’s retirement. He shared insights into the band’s decision-making process in an interview with Rock Candy.

Harris addressed the challenging situation the band faced when McBrain experienced health issues that ultimately led to his departure from the legendary metal group.

“To be honest, we didn’t really have a choice and had to make the change after Nicko suffered his health issues,” Harris said. “It was what it was, and we had a decision to make as to whether we wanted to carry on or not.”

The bassist explained how the timing of McBrain’s health scare created additional pressure for the band. They had existing tour commitments to consider.

“Obviously we had a tour booked at the time that it happened, and the rest of us all wanted to continue,” Harris continued. “But ultimately, after we got through all that, it was Nick’s decision to step away and we all respected the fact that he’d decided to do that.”

Harris’s comments shed light on a challenging period that tested the resilience of one of heavy metal’s most enduring bands. They reveal the personal and professional struggles behind McBrain’s departure.

The health issues Harris referenced were serious and life-changing for the veteran drummer. AXS TV reported that McBrain suffered a stroke in January 2023. The stroke caused partial paralysis and became a major factor in his retirement decision. The medical emergency marked a turning point for both the drummer and the band. It forced them to confront the reality of continuing without their longtime percussionist.

McBrain’s official retirement announcement came on December 7, 2024. This followed what would be his final performance with Iron Maiden in São Paulo, Brazil. Sonic Perspectives noted that the drummer described his decision as “easy at the time” but expressed sadness at no longer having the full fitness required to perform with Iron Maiden on tour.

“The decision was easy at the time, but it’s sad that I don’t have the full fitness to play with Iron Maiden on tour anymore,” McBrain said. He reflected on his departure from the band he had served for over four decades.

The band moved quickly to address the vacancy left by McBrain’s retirement. Ultimate Guitar confirmed that Iron Maiden brought in Simon Dawson as their new touring drummer to fulfill upcoming commitments. This ensured the band could continue their planned performances.

The transition represents a significant moment in Iron Maiden’s history. McBrain had been an integral part of the band’s sound and identity for decades. Harris’s candid remarks provide rare insight into how the legendary group navigated this pivotal challenge while honoring both their commitment to fans and their respect for McBrain’s difficult decision.
