\u201cI can\u2019t really speak to the Gilby thing as much, but with Izzy, there are certain things I view as integral,\u201d Fortus said. \u201cThere\u2019s never been a time when Slash has said to me, \u2018I think you should copy what Izzy did here.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Fortus emphasized that Slash trusts his musical instincts and remains open to his interpretations.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s very much in the moment,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe\u2019s come back to me and said, \u2018I listened to this live recording we did, and I didn\u2019t realize you were doing that. That\u2019s really cool.\u2019 But he\u2019s never said, \u2018I think you should do this\u2026\u2019 He is very trusting of how I approach things.\u201d<\/p>\n
The guitarist explained that his choices are driven by respect for the band\u2019s legacy rather than external pressure.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut there are things that \u2013 out of respect to the genius of Izzy and what makes this band legendary \u2013 I play what I think is integral to the song,\u201d Fortus noted. \u201cThere are moments with a lot of the stuff that I interpret in my own way, but I feel very akin to Izzy\u2019s approach and where he was coming from with the songs. I think about that spirit when I approach a song.\u201d<\/p>\n
