\u201cYes, it was a pretty simple reaction by me. It\u2019s just the way I\u2019m brought up and stuff like that,\u201d Mangini said. \u201cAnd also, the interesting thing is being able to step outside of yourself. And when I say that, you gotta understand, when you study the brain, the emotional area of the brain surrounds the reasoning area which surrounds the moral area.\u201d<\/p>\n
He elaborated on how emotional responses can cloud judgment and decision-making.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo when you study brain, it\u2019s called the moral center, then your reasoning ability and then your emotional. So when you are tied up with emotion, you can\u2019t be reasonable. Just look at the world,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd if you don\u2019t have a good set of morals, you don\u2019t know how to reason. So if people manage to get you in that emotional area and you haven\u2019t really looked into the act of reasoning, critical thinking, and you haven\u2019t looked into what\u2019s really right and wrong here with a set of, maybe, philosophers behind you and belief systems and all of that stuff, if you haven\u2019t even done that, you haven\u2019t even asked the question \u2014 not who am I, but what am I \u2014 I don\u2019t think you can wrap your head around this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mangini also addressed his decision not to publicly discuss internal band matters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe other thing is if I\u2019m looking at, let\u2019s say, an old-school heavy metal magazine or something \u2014 with today, you go online \u2014 I just don\u2019t buy in to anybody in any band revealing things that are family. These things happen; it\u2019s a closed-doors thing,\u201d he explained. \u201cYou don\u2019t reveal stuff about your coworkers. I just can\u2019t wrap my head around that. So there\u2019s that aspect of it, which really didn\u2019t apply to me. But it could have. I could have spoken about. It was just, like, \u2018Okay, next.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Mangini\u2019s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Dream Theater\u2019s history. He served as the band\u2019s drummer for over a decade following his selection in 2010.<\/p>\n
