The BBC have been cleared of the most serious breaches during the Glastonbury set of punk duo Bob Vylan. However, the Glastonbury set did break editorial guidelines, the new investigation has found.<\/p>\n
Their set at Worthy Farm earlier this summer was met with particular hostility after the punk duo\u2019s vocalist chanted, \u201cDeath to the IDF.\u201d They also called out the BBC\u2019s complicity in the \u201cgenocide in Gaza\u201d using on-screen projections that underlined their message.<\/p>\n
As a result of Bob Vylan\u2019s comments at Glastonbury, their visas were revoked in the United States, and their management company, UTA, dropped them. Damon Albarn also deemed the set a \u201cspectacular misfire\u201d.<\/p>\n
The BBC was questioned by the UK\u2019s Culture, Media & Sport Committee over its actions around allowing the live feed of the performance to continue on iPlayer and on demand for several hours after. The director general had previously admitted that the BBC made \u201ca very significant mistake\u201d in broadcasting the performance on iPlayer. It was also reported by The Times that Clarke had stepped back from her role amid the controversy related to Bob Vylan\u2019s set at Worthy Farm.<\/p>\n
The new investigation has found that the BBC broke harm and offence guidelines over the IDF chants, and the use of the slogans \u201cFrom the river to the sea\u201d and \u201cFree, free Palestine\u201d. Nonetheless, the chants were not considered to incite violence. Though they can be seen as denying the existence of Israel, they can also be \u201cregarded as no more than expressions of support for aspirations to a Palestinian state\u201d, the report stated.<\/p>\n
The report admitted that the \u201cdeath to the IDF\u201d chant was considered \u201cclearly more problematic\u201d. However, it was aimed at an institution \u201cwhich is not defined by ethnic or religious composition\u201d and not at an individual.<\/p>\n
However, the frontman\u2019s reference to a \u201cf*cking Zionist\u201d in relation to a record label boss was seen to breach guidance prohibiting \u201cunduly intimidating, humiliating, intrusive, aggressive or derogatory remarks aimed at real people\u201d and could \u201cfairly be characterised as antisemitic\u201d.<\/p>\n
The BBC also did not breach impartiality rules, as it was concluded that they were not expected to meet the same standards as news or current affairs shows during a music event.<\/p>\n
Local police continue to assess Bob Vylan\u2019s on-stage comments. A similar investigation into Kneecap\u2019s performance was thrown out after no further action from Avon and Somerset Police was needed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
