In this horrifically dystopian digital world in which we all reside, the internet has been responsible for a number of atrocities over the years; from data mining to AI misinformation, and those YouTube videos of people playing ukuleles in the early 2010s. One product of the internet that not even Tim Berners-Lee could have predicted, however, is the rise of egg-punk \u2013 one glimmering light in the increasingly murky digital landscape.<\/p>\n
Emerging from the depths of Bandcamp back in the 2010s, the infectious energy, DIY ethos, and distinct sense of humour surrounding the egg-punk scene had given it a cult following all across the world. Particularly in recent years, though, the egg scene of mainland Europe has been producing some of the strongest acts, in the form of groups like Prison Affair, Teo Wise, and, now, Technopolice. Since 2022, the Marseille outfit have been flying the flag for French egg-punks, and their newly released debut album Chein De La Casse marks them out among the most exciting new bands in the scene.<\/p>\n
When you first stick the album on, you are greeted immediately with a wave of infectious, upbeat energy from the band on the opening track, \u2018Hellastic\u2019, complete with more false-finishes than most other bands would ever attempt in a sub-two-minute track. From there, the energy rarely lets off as the tracklisting builds, with the fuzzy guitar tones, an arsenal of earworm synths, and fittingly dynamic vocals delivered in both English and French.<\/p>\n
Aside from a few curveballs and unexpected moments on the album, such as the laid-back melancholy of the album\u2019s closing moment, \u2018Puke\u2019, which offers an entirely different side to the DIY sound of Technopolice, the album is dominated by short, sharp, garage rock anthems. There is no fluff, no superfluous solos and self-aggrandising vocal displays; just raw, infectious, back-to-basics garage rock which packs an incredible punch, particularly against the backdrop of an increasingly self-involved, overly complex post-punk landscape.<\/p>\n
Is it the most groundbreaking or profound album of the year? No. But there is certainly something to be said for blowing off the cobwebs and laying down a great, bare bones, all-out rock and roll record every once in a while, and Technopolice have done just that.<\/p>\n
