Primarily a pop rock band, The 1975 got into many genres including synth-pop, indie rock, and country over the years. Despite this broad mix, Matty Healy recently told the \u2018Doom Scroll\u2019 podcast that they are not interested in taking a heavier direction with their music.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were hated for essentially being a band that was the opposite of heavy,\u201d the singer shared. \u201cAnd I was like, well, after [1998\u2019s] \u2018The Shape of Punk to Come\u2019 came out \u2014 [it was] the last punk album \u2014 it knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cRefused \u2014 they split up because they were politically so different\u2026 And in their last show, the cops came. It makes me want to cry; I get chills thinking about it. The cops came in, and all of their fans turned around and shouted the line from \u2018Rather Be Dead\u2019: \u2018I\u2019d rather be alive.\u2019 And they\u2019re just shouting, \u2018I\u2019d rather be alive. I\u2019d rather be alive,\u2019 as Refused physically disbanded.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, when I saw that, I thought, \u2018I can\u2019t do something heavy that touches on that.\u2019 Because for me\u2026 unless you\u2019re Glassjaw, Converge, Refused, or further than that, heavy is f*cking lame. So, the reason we\u2019re not heavy \u2014 and we can do heavy all day long \u2014 but we\u2019re not because it wasn\u2019t new. We wanted to be something quite new.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 1975\u2019s style hasn\u2019t always gone over well with fans and other musicians, who criticized them for not being rock enough. Last year, Noel Gallagher voiced his annoyance at Healy\u2019s win in the Brit Awards\u2019 rock\/alternative category, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s just a pity guitar music has become marginalized. You\u2019ve either got to be rock, or that f*cking [The] 1975. At the BRITs, The 1975 won Best Rock or some f*cking sh*t.\u201d<\/p>\n
He went on, \u201cI was watching it with my kids, two teenage lads, thinking, \u2018Is it me being a grumpy old man, or is this sh*t?\u2019 They were both going, \u2018Oh no, this is f*cking sh*t.\u2019 The 1975, Best Rock Band? Someone needs to re-define that immediately, because that is\u2026 I don\u2019t know what that is, but it\u2019s certainly not f*cking rock. Whatever rock is, that\u2019s not it.\u201c<\/p>\n
The 1975 last released their pop rock-synthwave album, \u2018Being Funny in a Foreign Language,\u2019 in 2022.
