{"id":1572,"date":"2025-07-24T04:46:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/countrymusictune.com\/?p=1572"},"modified":"2025-07-24T04:46:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:46:17","slug":"1572-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/countrymusictune.com\/?p=1572","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ozzy Osbourne, the wailing Black Sabbath singer-turned-solo act who took the \u201cCrazy Train\u201d from a bleak childhood in working-class Birmingham, England, to heavy metal stardom, has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was 76.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His family announced the rock legend&#8217;s passing in a statement: \u201cIt is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Word of Osbourne&#8217;s demise came more than two weeks after the ailing frontman reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates\u00a0Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for\u00a0a triumphant final show\u00a0on July\u00a05.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after Osbourne&#8217;s death was announced, a two-word tribute appeared on the official Facebook page of Black Sabath:\u00a0&#8220;Ozzy Forever.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black Sabbath&#8217;s final show was witnessed by 45,000 fans packing\u00a0Birmingham\u2019s Villa Park\u00a0soccer stadium and by 5.8 million more metalheads around the world who watched online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2025-07\/250706-black-sabbath-4-rs-b6e801.jpg\" alt=\"Ozzy Osbourne performs July 5 at the &quot;Back to the Beginning&quot; concert in Birmingham, England.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ozzy Osbourne performs July 5 at the &#8220;Back to the Beginning&#8221; concert in Birmingham, England.Ross Halfin via Live Nation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got no idea how I feel,&#8221; Osbourne said, sitting on a leather throne because he could no longer stand, his mascara smeared by tears. &#8220;Thank you from the bottom of my heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne&#8217;s wife, TV personality Sharon Osbourne,\u00a0revealed in February\u00a0that Ozzy was unable to walk because of Parkinson&#8217;s disease, but that the diagnosis &#8220;doesn&#8217;t affect his voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dubbed the &#8220;Prince of Darkness,&#8221; Osbourne managed to muscle through four of Sabbath&#8217;s most iconic number: \u201cWar Pigs,\u201d \u201cNIB,\u201d \u201cIron Man\u201d and perhaps the band&#8217;s biggest hit, \u201cParanoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bands that are direct musical descendants of Black Sabbath like Metallica, Slayer and Alice in Chains, as well as performers like Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones, completed the metal marathon by cranking out covers from Black Sabbath\u2019s catalog or Osbourne\u2019s solo career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was no secret that Osbourne had been sick for some time. He Osborne opened up about his battles with Parkinson&#8217;s disease and repeated spinal surgeries in a\u00a0November 2023 interview\u00a0with Rolling Stone magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m taking it one day at a time, and if I can perform again, I will,\u201d the then 74-year-old singer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne acknowledged that the epic amount of drugs and alcohol he ingested early on in his career had taken a toll on his health. And he credited his wife with repeatedly\u00a0saving his &#8220;arse.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do count my lucky stars,&#8221; Osbourne told the magazine. &#8220;I don\u2019t know why I\u2019m still here and I do sometimes think I\u2019m on borrowed time. I said to Sharon the other day, \u2018What a great f&#8212;&#8211;g life we\u2019ve had and what a great f&#8212;&#8211;g experience.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Michael Osbourne was born Dec. 3, 1948, in Birmingham, the fourth of six children of a poor family. There was little to indicate that he would amount to anything \u2014 much less become an idol to millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne,\u00a0who struggled with dyslexia, dropped out of school at 15 to work a series of menial factory jobs, including toiling in a slaughterhouse and testing car horns. He also served a brief stint in prison for burglary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-01\/230127-ozzy-osbourne-mb-1125-1183d9.jpg\" alt=\"Ozzy Osbourne\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ozzy Osbourne in London in 1975.&nbsp;Ian Dickson \/ Redferns via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne wasn\u2019t exactly planning to rock the world when he started singing at local clubs. In 1968, he joined a band in need of a frontman called the Polka Tulk Blues Band, which was then comprised of Iommi, Butler and Ward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They changed their name to Earth. But as their sound turned heavier and their lyrics delved into horror and the occult, they opted for yet another name change, inspired by the title of a Boris Karloff film: \u201cBlack Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBlack Sabbath wasn\u2019t a band that was created by some big mogul guy,\u201d\u00a0Osbourne told the BBC in 2017. \u201cIt was four guys who went, \u2018Let\u2019s have a go.\u2019 We had a dream and it came true beyond our wildest expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember playing in the Crown Pub in Birmingham and thinking, \u2018This will be good for a couple of years, drink a few beers and have a jam.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ride lasted considerably longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their 1970 self-titled debut album hit the top 10 in the U.K. and No. 23 on the U.S. charts. A year later, their second album, \u201cParanoid,\u201d topped the charts in the U.K. and\u00a0reached No. 12 across the pond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-01\/230127-ozzy-osbourne-mb-1200-7cddd0.jpg\" alt=\"Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ozzy Osbourne performing live with Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1976.&nbsp;Fin Costello \/ Redferns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the critics were not kind at first. Black Sabbath was dismissed by some as\u00a0\u201cSatanic claptrap\u201d\u00a0and worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The worst of the counterculture on a plastic platter,&#8221;\u00a0Robert Christgau, the &#8220;Dean of American Rock Critics,&#8221; wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the 1960s gave way to the 1970s, a new generation of fans embraced Black Sabbath&#8217;s dark lyrics and sludgy sound, a new style of rock music that would become known as heavy metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mark of a great rock band is that X-factor that sets them apart from other bands,\u201d\u00a0Bruce Barber, a former radio jock who teaches at the University of New Haven. \u201cOzzy had that X-factor. And for many young people, Black Sabbath\u2019s music, which emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the Vietnam War was raging, spoke to the issues of that time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Tavern, a music professor at the University of New Haven, said Osbourne&#8217;s distinctive voice had a lot to do with Black Sabbath&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;His throaty delivery, reminiscent of old-time blues shouters, brings an unkempt directness to the genre, a literal devil-may-care approach to singing that allowed blues-based rock to morph into metal,&#8221; Tavern said. &#8220;At the same time, his raw, shrieking wail fit with the band\u2019s guitar-driven approach and meshed with the dark sounds and emotions that fans were looking to connect with.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTechnically speaking, he was a natural tenor with a good range and a powerful, focused voice,\u201d\u00a0Katherine Dacey, a professor at the Berklee College of Music, said before Osbourne\u2019s death was announced. \u201cThat description doesn\u2019t really do justice to his instrument or artistry, though, as he had one of those rare voices that\u2019s immediately recognizable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Osbourne embraced the sex, drugs and rock n&#8217; roll lifestyle with a gusto that drew comparisons to another world-class partier, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, and alarmed his bandmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne&#8217;s uncanny ability to consume prodigious amounts of cocaine and liquor \u2014 and not die \u2014 would later lead scientists in 2011 to conclude that he was a &#8220;genetic mutant&#8221; whose body possessed a unique ability to absorb recreational drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always said that at the end of the world there will be roaches, Ozzy and Keith Richards,&#8221;\u00a0Sharon Osbourne said\u00a0at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But,\u00a0as Iommi admitted to The Guardian years later, Osbourne was out of control during his last years with Black Sabbath. After a string of disappointing albums, Osbourne was fired in 1979 and replaced by Ronnie James Dio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting canned, however, didn\u2019t end Osbourne\u2019s career. Enter Sharon Levy, the daughter of Don Arden, the man who managed Black Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arden had pushed for Osbourne to be fired. But Sharon made rescuing Osbourne her mission, becoming his manager, lover and, eventually, his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-01\/230127-ozzy-sharon-mb-1148-2e1977.jpg\" alt=\"Ozzy Osbourne Concert After-Party\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne in 1984.Ron Galella \/ Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Under her guidance, Osbourne released a 1980 solo debut,&nbsp;<em>\u201c<\/em>Blizzard of Ozz,\u201d which went multiplatinum and produced the hit song &#8220;Crazy Train.&#8221; He followed up a year later with another huge hit, \u201cDiary of a Madman,\u201d backed by a talented band of musicians, including a guitar wunderkind named Randy Rhoads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the tour for the album, Rhoads and two other members of the entourage died in a plane crash after the pilot reportedly tried to \u201cbuzz\u201d the bus on which Osbourne was sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharon Osbourne also helped her husband get Ozzfest off the ground, a wildly popular music festival that toured from 1996 to 2018, often headlined by Osbourne, that featured other established and fledgling heavy metal and hard rock acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all his success, Osbourne \u2014 in the eyes of many in the public \u2014 continued to be the madman who outraged animal rights groups in 1982 by biting the head off a live bat during a concert in Des Moines, Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was a rubber bat,\u201d Osbourne\u00a0said at the time.\u00a0\u201cI picked it up, put it in my mouth, crunched down, bit into it, being the clown that I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a statement Tuesday calling Osbourne a &#8220;legend and a provocateur&#8221; who also used his fame to campaign against declawing cats. &#8220;Ozzy will be missed by animal advocates the world over,&#8221; PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne also infuriated the state of Texas in 1982 by\u00a0urinating on the Alamo, a stunt that got him arrested and for which he later apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alamo, in an official statement\u00a0on its Facebook page, acknowledged the &#8220;deeply disrespectful incident&#8221; but said Osbourne had made amends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today, we acknowledge Ozzy Osbourne\u2019s journey from regret to reconciliation at the historic site, and we extend our condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There also was the time Osbourne reportedly snorted live ants instead of cocaine on a whim in\u00a0a bizarre contest\u00a0with his band\u2019s opening act, M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were a wild young band, and he kind of took us under his wing,\u201d Cr\u00fce\u2019s Nikki Sixx told the New York Post. \u201cWe thought we could compete with that, but you can\u2019t with Ozzy. He won.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-01\/230127-osbournes-mb-1209-0cc445.jpg\" alt=\"Jack Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne Ozzy Osbourne,Kelly Osbourne.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jack, Sharon, Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne at the Scream Awards in Los Angeles on Oct. 18, 2008.&nbsp;Chris Pizzello \/ AP file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the \u201990s, Osbourne&#8217;s popularity was fading. So in 2002, Sharon Osbourne rebooted her husband\u2019s career yet again \u2014 on the cable TV channel that had helped him become a solo star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Osbournes,\u201d the MTV reality show that followed the aging rocker and his family\u2019s unlikely domesticity, won him a new audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe show introduced him to a whole other group of people who had heard of him and vaguely knew his music but really got to know him through that show,\u201d said Robert Thompson, the director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also made Osbourne an unlikely TV star and led to invitations to meet the likes of President George W. Bush and perform at Queen Elizabeth II&#8217;s jubilee in 2002. He, of course, played &#8220;Paranoid.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barber said he interviewed the Osbournes around that time. He said he arrived at what was then called the Parker Meridien Hotel in Manhattan expecting to find them &#8220;in a trashed room.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Instead, there he was with Sharon dressed in matching Parker Meridian bathrobes,&#8221; Barber said. &#8220;They were kind and polite. And I was struck by the juxtaposition between the &#8216;Prince of Darkness&#8217; Ozzy that we all heard about and the Ozzy sipping tea with Sharon.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne continued to rock and roll \u2014 even reuniting with the original Black Sabbath lineup (minus Ward) for several lucrative tours and the band\u2019s only No. 1 album in the U.S., \u201c13,\u201d\u00a0which was\u00a0released in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve-years later came word that Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward were reuniting for the first time in 20 years for a final concert this month. The\u00a0show sold out\u00a0almost immediately after the box office opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-01\/230127-ozzy-osbourne-mb-1143-65b3ba.jpg\" alt=\"Hultsfred music festival, Hultsfred, Sweden - 23 Jun 2007\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ozzy Osbourne performing in Sweden in 2007.Jeppe Gustafsson \/ Shutterstock file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, Osbourne had garnered what he had been denied when he first started out \u2014 respect from music critics and other naysayers who underestimated him and Black Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn his earlier days, he was never going to be considered one of the great vocalists of all time, but his voice certainly fit the music he made,\u201d heavy metal historian Eddie Trunk said. \u201cHe had his moments as a singer, but his biggest legacy is as a tremendous character, a tremendous entertainer, and a very likable \u2014 and sellable \u2014 figure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osbourne is survived by his wife, Sharon, and six children \u2014 Jessica, Louis and Elliot from his first marriage to Thelma Riley, and Aimee, Kelly and Jack from his second marriage. He also leaves behind quite the legend \u2014 onstage and off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ozzy-osbourne-the-rolling-stone-interview-48790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I<\/a>n 2002, Osbourne told Rolling Stone magazine\u00a0that he would like his my epitaph to read \u201cjust \u2018Ozzy Osbourne, born 1948, died so-and-so.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done a lot for a simple working-class guy,&#8221; Osbourne said. &#8220;I made a lot of people smile. I\u2019ve also made a lot of people go, \u2018Who the f&#8212; does this guy think he is?\u2019 I guarantee that if I was to die tonight, tomorrow it would be, \u2018Ozzy Osbourne, the man who bit the head off a bat, died in his hotel room &#8230; .\u2019 I know that\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019ve got no complaints.
