But this was no ordinary tribute. Instead, the circumstances surrounding the performance helped it go down in the country music history books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many country artists, Jackson always admired Jones as one of his musical heroes.&nbsp;<strong>However, \u201cThe Possum\u201d was even more to Jackson than just a role model; he was a friend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The two maintained a friendship for many years.<\/strong>&nbsp;Jones and his wife, Nancy, even appeared in Jackson\u2019s music video for \u201cGood Time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Jones passed away in 2013, Jackson took to the Opry stage at his funeral and performed Jones\u2019 iconic track,&nbsp;\u201cHe Stopped Loving Her Today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_61350\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/countrymusicfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/alan-jones-funeral-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Jackson performing at George Jones' funeral\" class=\"wp-image-61350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Rick Diamond \/ Getty Images for Nancy Jones<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Years prior, Jackson showed his respect for Jones with another performance of&nbsp;one of his emotional songs.&nbsp;In&nbsp;doing so, he created what is now known as one of the greatest moments in country music history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Story Behind Jones\u2019 \u201cChoices\u201d &amp; His Decision Not To Sing At The&nbsp;<em>CMA Awards<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The year was 1999. Both Jones and Jackson were experiencing immense career success at the time. Jones\u2019 album,&nbsp;<em>Cold Hard Truth<\/em>, was one of the best-performing records of his career. It peaked at the fifth spot on the&nbsp;<em>Top<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Country Albums<\/em>&nbsp;chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Its success was boosted by its most popular track, \u201cChoices.&nbsp;<\/strong>Songwriters Billy Yates and Mike Curtis wrote it with Jones in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"George Jones - Choices\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BQMI7TksYo0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cChoices\u201d was an instant hit, and radio stations received endless calls to play it.<\/strong>&nbsp;It was also a hit within the music industry. Jones earned the&nbsp;<em>Grammy<\/em>&nbsp;for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for bringing the song to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChoices\u201d was also nominated for Single of the Year at the 1999&nbsp;<em>CMA Awards<\/em>&nbsp;(it lost to The Chicks\u2019 \u201cWide Open Spaces\u201d). Since Jones was a nominee, the CMA asked him to perform \u201cChoices\u201d during the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But there was a catch.&nbsp;<\/strong>The CMA allegedly told Jones he would have limited time to perform, so they asked him to sing a shortened version of \u201cChoices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones refused. Furthermore, he ended up not attending the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alan Jackson Interrupts His Own Song To Sing George Jones\u2019 Choices At The&nbsp;<em>CMA Awards<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is where Jackson came in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson was also invited to perform on the show. However, only his band knew that underneath his grin and white cowboy hat, Jackson was less than happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hearing how the CMA approached Jones about singing \u201cChoices,\u201d Jackson was upset. He decided if the CMA wasn\u2019t going to let Jones sing the way he wanted to, he would make certain he was still recognized during the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suddenly, during an instrumental break in \u201cPop a Top,\u201d Jackson stopped singing his own song.<\/strong>&nbsp;Instead, he broke into an emotional performance of \u201cChoices,\u201d prompting the entire crowd to cheer and rise to its feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Remember one of my fav songs being sung by Alan Jackson at the CMA awards show, \u201cChoices\u201d by George Jones.
