Foo Fighters Officially Announce New Drummer, Then Spark Buzz with Profile Photo Change

Foo Fighters have officially welcomed Ilan Rubin as their new drummer following their first performance together, as announced on Instagram. The band subsequently updated their social media profile photos to include Rubin in a new group image.

The band made the announcement with enthusiasm, sharing their excitement about the new addition to their lineup.

“That was fun! Welcome, Ilan Rubin,” the band said in their caption accompanying the post.

The profile photo change has generated significant discussion among fans, with many expressing hope for the band’s future direction. One fan shared their optimism about what this new chapter might bring for the group.

“I really hope this is a new era for them,” a Foo Fighters fan commented on the band’s new profile photo. “They don’t owe us anything, but I’d really love to see them do interviews again. Just light hearted stuff- I miss the humour and camaraderie.”

Another supporter expressed confidence in the choice of Rubin as the band’s new drummer.

“I hope it works out with Ilan, he seems like a right fit for Foo Fighters,” another fan wrote. “And it’s definitely easier to be the 2nd drummer after Taylor Hawkins than the 1st.”

The addition of Rubin brings a wealth of experience and rock history to the Foo Fighters lineup, marking an exciting new chapter for the band.

Loudwire reported that Ilan Rubin, 36, is no stranger to rock history, having made significant achievements well before joining Foo Fighters. He played Woodstock ’99 at the age of 11, earning a Guinness World Record as the youngest musician ever to perform on a Woodstock stage. This early achievement showcased his exceptional talent and set the stage for a remarkable career in rock music.

More recently, Wikipedia documented that Rubin became the youngest inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of Nine Inch Nails, highlighting his prestigious career path. His tenure with Nine Inch Nails since 2009 has established him as one of the most respected drummers in alternative rock.

This drummer change also represents an unusual swap in the drumming circles of top bands. Modern Drummer revealed that Josh Freese, who was previously Foo Fighters’ drummer, has returned to Nine Inch Nails—where Rubin had played since 2009—marking a direct drummer exchange between the bands. This swap drew attention as both artists returned to their former groups in mid-2025.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for the band as they move forward with their new lineup. Hindustan Times confirmed that Rubin will debut officially with the band during upcoming shows in Jakarta, Singapore, and Mexico City this October, giving fans their first chance to see the new lineup in action.
