David Gilmour Names the Best Band He’s Ever Played With, And It’s Not Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour recently made a surprising revelation about his musical collaborations. He shared this in an interview with Q1043 New York.

Gilmour was asked about playing alongside legendary musicians throughout his career—from his Pink Floyd bandmates to icons like Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, David Crosby, and Graham Nash. The interviewer asked whether he had told his current Luck and Strange tour band that they were the best he’d ever played with.

“I think they’ve heard that. I think I made that pretty clear myself,” Gilmour responded. “I should have done, I guess, and said, ‘You are the best band I’ve ever played with.’”

The guitarist went on to clarify what sets his current touring band apart from those memorable collaborations with music legends.

“I mean, you can’t count, you know, playing things with a legend like McCartney or, you know, Pete Townshend or having the lovely Crosby and Nash on stage with you and Bowie,” he explained. “These are moments that are just wonderful and unforgettable but not the same quite as having a band of guys who are doing living and breathing your stuff and supporting you, carrying that weight every night over a tour.”

The comments highlight the distinction between special guest appearances and the deep musical connection formed with a dedicated touring ensemble that performs together night after night.

The band Gilmour praised consists of exceptional musicians who have been touring with him throughout 2024. Pink Floyd Z reported that the lineup includes Guy Pratt on bass, Adam Betts on drums, Rob Gentry and Greg Phillinganes on keyboards, Ben Worsley on guitar, and backing vocalists Louise Marshall, Charley Webb, and Hattie Webb.

The tour supports Gilmour’s latest album “Luck and Strange.” The album was released on September 6, 2024, on Sony Music. Legacy Recordings noted that this marks his first new album in nine years. David Gilmour and Charlie Andrew produced it. The album features collaborations with Polly Samson, Gilmour’s long-time co-writer, and includes a special contribution from the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, recorded in 2007.

The 2024 tour took the band to prestigious venues across the globe. Wikipedia detailed that the tour included six nights at Circo Massimo in Rome, six nights at Royal Albert Hall in London, performances at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and five nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The success of the tour has been documented in multiple releases. David Gilmour Tour confirmed that “The Luck and Strange Concerts” live album was released on October 17, 2024. The “Live at the Circus Maximus, Rome” live film premiered in theaters in September 2024. Digital and home media releases followed in October 2024. These releases capture the chemistry and musical excellence that Gilmour praised in his recent comments about the band.
