Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson recently shared his thoughts on the band’s new drummer, Simon Dawson, and how his style differs from retired drummer Nicko McBrain. He made these comments in an interview featured on Talk Is Jericho via Blabbermouth.
Dickinson emphasized that Dawson brings a distinct approach to drumming. He contrasted McBrain’s explosive energy with a more measured and analytical style.
“Nick was like a human fireworks display every night in terms of his drumming, personality and everything else,” Dickinson said. “And Simon’s not; he’s low-key. He is not exactly the polar opposite to Nick, but he’s different. He’s more thoughtful. He’s very analytical.”
The drummer transition marks a significant moment in Iron Maiden’s history. It follows McBrain’s retirement from touring after more than four decades with the band.
Sonic Perspectives reported that McBrain officially announced his retirement on December 7, 2024, after a final performance at the Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil. His decision was primarily driven by health concerns, specifically a stroke he suffered in January 2023 that caused partial paralysis and affected his ability to maintain the demanding touring lifestyle.
Louder Sound revealed that Steve Harris had to consider the band’s future seriously after McBrain’s health issues. Harris stated that they had no choice but to make the change due to the stroke. McBrain described the retirement as a mix of emotions but noted it was an easy decision given his physical challenges following the stroke.
Simon Dawson made his debut with Iron Maiden in May 2025 during the opening night of their Run For Your Lives tour in Budapest. He stepped into one of heavy metal’s most demanding drumming roles. His selection as McBrain’s replacement indicates a strong professional reputation and the capability to handle the technical demands of Iron Maiden’s extensive catalog.
While McBrain has stepped back from touring, Ultimate Classic Rock noted that there is speculation he could potentially contribute to studio recordings. Some band members have left open the possibility of him playing on new Iron Maiden albums. Post-retirement, McBrain continues to perform music with his Iron Maiden tribute band Titanium Tart and has launched the Metal Sticks Podcast with Modern Drummer CEO David Frangioni.
The band plans to continue touring at least through 2026 with Dawson as the live drummer. This ensures Iron Maiden’s legacy continues on stage with a new chapter in their storied history.
