GWAR’s Blothar the Berserker recently discussed the possibility of adding a kiss cam to the band’s live performances. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Full Metal Jackie.
The conversation arose when Full Metal Jackie asked about whether GWAR would consider incorporating a kiss cam feature at their shows, given recent public events.
“Oh, a kiss cam. Absolutely. I think we should have just a poop cam. I don’t know. That would be gross, wouldn’t it? You know, a lot of pooping,” Blothar responded.
When Full Metal Jackie followed up by asking if there’s a lot of public pooping that happens at GWAR shows, Blothar provided additional context about the band’s nature.
“I don’t know. The truth of the matter is that GWAR is the outside cat of bands now. We really don’t belong indoors because we’re gonna make a mess and stink up the place,” he said. “But I think that a kiss cam would be a great, I don’t know, Gwar fans kissing on a big screen?”
Blothar’s comments about making a mess align perfectly with GWAR’s legendary reputation for theatrical chaos during their live performances.
GWAR shows are renowned for their elaborate stage theatrics that create an immersive experience unlike any other metal band. The Lantern reported that the band liberally uses fake blood, slime, and other fluids during performances. Fans in the front rows are expected to get splattered as part of the show experience. This spectacle contributes to the band’s distinctive “shock rock” reputation and creates an interactive atmosphere that has defined their concerts for decades.
Despite the apparent chaos of GWAR performances, there’s an underlying structure to the mayhem that fans appreciate. The intense mosh pits at their concerts appear rough and wild, but they actually follow unwritten social rules that promote safety among participants. UTK Anthropology Blog noted that these mosh pits have established protocols such as immediately helping fallen participants to avoid injury. This adds a layer of communal respect beneath the apparent chaos.
The band’s theatrical approach extends beyond just the physical spectacle to encompass their entire stage persona. Tampa Bay Times highlighted that GWAR’s elaborate costumes and stage characters have been a cornerstone of their identity since their formation. This creates a mythology that enhances the concert experience for dedicated fans. This commitment to theatrical performance art makes the potential addition of a kiss cam seem both unexpected and perfectly in character for the band.
The comments reflect GWAR’s characteristic irreverent approach to discussing their live performances and fan interactions. They suggest that even conventional concert features like kiss cams would receive the band’s unique twisted interpretation.
