Billy Corgan Reflects on ‘Today’ Anniversary With Emotional Message

Billy Corgan recently shared an emotional reflection on the anniversary of The Smashing Pumpkins’ hit song “Today.” He posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.

The post commemorated the song’s release on September 30, 1993. Corgan shared a deeply personal quote from the 2011 Siamese Dream liner notes that reveals the dark origins behind the seemingly upbeat track.

“The song that changed my life more than any other,” Corgan said. “The ultimate in irony: a chirpy song about my near-suicide that all the kids can sing along to.”

He continued to reflect on the song’s creation and its broader meaning.

“Probably would not have been a hit if I had offed myself in the gloaming before its release, but one can still ponder past the graveyard,” he said. “I stood in our dingy rehearsal space, amps a-buzzin’, and said, ‘This song needs an opening bit.’ I placed my hands on the guitar, stared down waiting, and without warning out came this chiming clock of anticipation.”

The musician also touched on the song’s mysterious lyrics and generational themes.

“I wasn’t sure why I needed to sing ‘I want to turn you on,’ but in hindsight it makes perfect sense locked in the dust of a new millennium,” Corgan said. “We are born, a generation dies soon enough.”

Corgan concluded his post with an important message of support. He added “Help is available. 9-8-8 lifeline” to encourage those who might be struggling with similar issues.

Corgan’s reflection highlights the complex creative process behind one of The Smashing Pumpkins’ most recognizable tracks. The song became a defining track of the alternative rock era.

The creation of “Today” showcases Corgan’s meticulous approach to songwriting and production. Secrets of Songwriting reported that the iconic intro riff was added after the song was thought finished. This dramatically changed its character by providing a quiet contrast to the heavier main sections. This last-minute addition gave the song its memorable dynamic shift from soft to loud, creating the signature sound that would help define the band’s style.

During the recording process for the Siamese Dream album, Corgan took an unusually hands-on approach to ensure the quality of “Today.” Wikipedia noted that Corgan played not only guitar and vocals on the track but also took on bass duties himself. This demonstrated his perfectionist tendencies and desire to maintain creative control over the band’s sound.

The song’s impact extended far beyond its initial release, becoming a cornerstone of 1990s alternative rock. Ultimate Guitar documented that “Today” helped establish The Smashing Pumpkins as major players in the grunge and alternative rock scene. Its contrasting quiet-loud dynamics influenced countless bands that followed.

The enduring relevance of Corgan’s message about mental health awareness reflects the ongoing importance of addressing the darker themes that inspired the song while celebrating its artistic legacy. His inclusion of the 988 lifeline number particularly emphasizes this commitment.
