Billie Joe Armstrong Joins Dua Lipa on Stage to Sing Green Day Hit

Billie Joe Armstrong joined Dua Lipa on stage during her show in San Francisco to perform a Green Day song. The collaboration created a memorable moment for fans at the Chase Center, as can be seen in the footage posted by Dua Lipa on Instagram.

Following the performance, Dua Lipa shared her emotional reaction to the collaboration on social media.

“I can’t believe my life sometimes. Sharing the stage with Billie Joe Armstrong and singing When September Ends felt like stepping straight into a dream I never thought would come true,” she said.

The pop star reflected on her childhood connection to Green Day’s music.

“I kept flashing back to little me running around the house with my Walkman tucked into the back of my jeans, the American Idiot Green Day album blasting in my ears, feeling like the world was so much bigger than I could imagine,” she continued. “Still trying to find the words but I loved everything about last night. Beyond surreal.”

The surprise collaboration took place on October 12, 2025. It was part of a special segment on Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour.

Louder Sound reported that the two artists performed a duet of Green Day’s classic 2004 ballad “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The performance was part of a unique tour feature where Dua Lipa chooses a song by a local artist each night as a surprise performance.

Before bringing Armstrong on stage, Lipa told the audience about her admiration for the band. “I love being here in your city… every night we do a different song, a surprise song, by a local artist. Thinking about the songs to do on this tour, I thought about San Francisco and all the incredible music that has come out of here and I thought about one band in particular. I love this band in so many different ways,” she said.

The Radical Optimism Tour has featured several notable guest appearances throughout its run. KKFM noted that Dua Lipa has previously brought out guests such as Lenny Kravitz, Charli XCX, Nile Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Neil Finn, and Gwen Stefani during different tour stops.

The choice to spotlight Green Day in San Francisco was particularly meaningful. The band is one of the city’s most iconic musical acts. This strategy of blending pop with local musical heritage has made each concert on the tour unique and engaging for fans.

The collaboration between the pop superstar and the punk rock legend created a cross-generational moment that resonated with audiences. The performance highlighted the enduring influence of Green Day’s music on artists across different genres.
